Both have world-class waves, but the vibe is completely different. Here's an honest breakdown to help you pick.
After years of hosting surfers at both our Canggu Surf Paradise and Uluwatu Surf Paradise, we get this question a lot: "Which one should I stay at?"
The honest answer: it depends on what kind of surf trip you want. Here's a clear breakdown.
Quick Summary
Choose Canggu if: You want a surf + culture + food + nightlife mix, with easy access to day trips and a more social vibe.
Choose Uluwatu if: You're focused purely on surfing world-class reef breaks and want a quieter, more traditional Bali experience.
The Surf
Canggu (Batu Bolong, Echo, Berawa):
- Long right-hand point breaks, friendly crowd, perfect for intermediate
- Works on most swells (more forgiving than Uluwatu)
- Beginner-friendly options (less crowded than Kuta)
- Mellow whitewater for first sessions
Uluwatu (Padang Padang, Uluwatu Beach, Bingin, Dreamland):
- World-class left-hand reef breaks, advanced-heavy
- Sharper reef, more powerful, requires skill
- Breaks only on bigger swells (not always beginner-friendly)
- The iconic "Bali surf experience" most people imagine
The Vibe
Canggu:
- Expat-heavy, social, busy
- Tons of cafes, beach clubs, restaurants
- Modern — coworking spaces, vegan food, yoga studios
- Easier to meet other travelers
- More traffic, more noise
Uluwatu:
- Quieter, more traditional
- Cliff-top views, fewer cafes
- Local surf scene (less touristy than Canggu)
- Better suited for focused surf trips
- Less nightlife
The Food
Canggu wins easily. The cafe and restaurant scene is unmatched. From cheap local warungs to upscale fine dining, the food variety is incredible. Plus coffee culture — multiple specialty roasters within walking distance of our hostel.
Uluwatu has decent options (Single Fin, some cliff-top warungs) but the food scene is limited. You'll likely end up eating at your hostel most nights.
The Cost
Canggu is more expensive — but the value is there. Hostels, food, transport, surf lessons all available.
Uluwatu is cheaper for accommodation and food. The trade-off is fewer options.
The Day Trips
From Canggu:
- Ubud (1 hour)
- Mt. Batur (2 hours)
- Sanur + Nusa Penida boat (1 hour)
- Sidemen (1.5 hours)
- Tanah Lot temple (30 min)
From Uluwatu:
- Padang-Padang, Bingin, Dreamland beaches (15-30 min)
- Single Fin cliff bar (15 min)
- Ungasan seafood (15 min)
- GWK Cultural Park (10 min)
- Ubud is harder (1.5+ hours)
The Crowd
Canggu is crowded year-round — ex-pats, digital nomads, surfers, yogis, weekenders from Jakarta. The Batu Bolong lineup gets packed on weekends.
Uluwatu is quieter — surfers in the morning, tourists for sunset, but evenings are calm. Better if you want to focus.
The Bottom Line
Pick Canggu if:
- First time in Bali
- Want variety (food, culture, surf, nightlife)
- Don't mind crowds
- Plan to take day trips
- Want a digital nomad vibe with good wifi
Pick Uluwatu if:
- Surf is your main focus
- You're intermediate-advanced+
- Prefer quieter, more focused
- Mainly interested in Bukit Peninsula surf
- Don't mind limited food options
The Pro Tip: Stay at Both
Our recommendation: stay 2-3 nights at each. Start with Canggu to acclimatize (food, wifi, vibe), then move to Uluwatu for focused surf time. Most of our guests do exactly this.
Both hostels are within a 1-hour drive of each other, so a split stay is easy. Just bring your board and we'll store it for you.
