7 Best Surf Spots in Uluwatu for Every Level

·6 min read

From the gentle shoulder of Padang Padang to the heavy barrel at Uluwatu Beach, here is your complete surf map of the Bukit Peninsula.

The Bukit Peninsula on Bali's southern tip is one of the most concentrated surf zones on the planet. Within a 20-minute scooter ride you can find peeling left-hand reef breaks, kid-friendly beach breaks, and a couple of heavy slabs that only work on specific swells. After surf-checking Uluwatu and its surrounds for years, here's my honest map of the seven spots that matter most.

Whether you're a first-timer looking for waist-high whitewater, or a tube-chasing veteran who wants the heaviest reef break in Bali, this list has something for you. All seven spots are accessible from our Uluwatu Surf Paradise hostel in Ungasan — most within a 15-minute scooter ride.

1. Padang Padang

The most photogenic wave in Bali, made famous by the 2010 documentary "Eat Pray Love." A perfect left-hand reef break that works on most swells. Best at mid to high tide; low tide exposes the sharp limestone.

There's a small contest scene here, and a cave you have to walk through to access the lineup. Beginner-friendly when small (under 3 feet), advanced when it gets bigger. The take-off can get crowded with longboarders, surf schools, and the occasional pro.

- Skill: Beginner to Advanced (depending on size)

  • Best tide: Mid to high
  • Best swell: S-SW, 4-8 feet
  • Bottom: Sharp limestone reef (booties recommended)
  • Best season: April to October

2. Uluwatu Beach

The big brother to Padang. A long, fast left that barrels off the cliffs at the famous cave. Advanced only — this is one of the heaviest waves in Bali. Best at mid tide with a solid south swell.

Watch out for the crowds (and the monkeys — they're notorious for stealing sunglasses). The lineup has multiple peaks; the insider spot is the far end (Temple Peak), which requires a paddle through a channel. The cave itself is one of the most photographed surf spots in the world.

- Skill: Advanced

  • Best tide: Mid
  • Best swell: S-SW, 6-12+ feet
  • Bottom: Sharp reef (booties essential)
  • Best season: May to September

3. Bingin

A short, punchy left with a perfect tube section. Located down a cliff-side staircase (go early before the stairs get crowded). Works on most swells; the take-off is right in front of the warung row.

The wave wraps into a bay that's loaded with cliff-top cafes and warungs — perfect for post-surf coconuts and cold Bintangs. Bingin is the local surfers' favorite for short, intense sessions.

- Skill: Intermediate to Advanced

  • Best tide: Mid
  • Best swell: S-SW, 4-8 feet
  • Bottom: Sharp reef (booties recommended)
  • Best season: April to October

4. Dreamland

The learner-friendly option on the Bukit. A long, sandy-bottom beach break that's perfect for intermediate surfers and lessons. Less crowded than Padang, with a few cliff-top cafes nearby for post-surf coconuts.

The wave is more forgiving here — the sandy bottom means wipeouts hurt less, and the longer rides give beginners time to find their feet. Several surf schools base at Dreamland specifically because of these conditions.

- Skill: Beginner to Intermediate

  • Best tide: Mid tide works best
  • Best swell: S-SW, 3-6 feet
  • Bottom: Sand (safe for learners)
  • Best season: April to October

5. Balangan

A reeling left with multiple sections, similar vibe to Bingin but less crowded. The access is steep (long staircase), but the reward is one of the longest lefts in Bali when conditions line up.

The cliff-top parking area has a few small warungs selling drinks and snacks. Most days you'll only share the lineup with 5-10 other surfers — a stark contrast to Padang's 30+ on a good day.

- Skill: Intermediate to Advanced

  • Best tide: Mid
  • Best swell: S-SW, 4-10 feet
  • Bottom: Sharp reef (booties recommended)
  • Best season: April to October

6. Green Bowl

East-facing, gets good wind protection in the morning. A long, right-hand point that works best on bigger swells. Advanced-intermediate level; the paddle out is long.

Green Bowl is named for the green algae that grows on the reef — it can be slippery, so booties are essential. The wave has a long wall section that's perfect for noseriding, and on bigger days it can throw out a solid barrel.

- Skill: Intermediate to Advanced

  • Best tide: Low to mid
  • Best swell: S-SW, 6-10 feet
  • Bottom: Sharp reef with algae (booties essential)
  • Best season: May to September

7. Nyang-Nyang

The secret spot. A long stretch of white sand and a peeling left when the swell lines up. Almost empty even in peak season. The access is steep and the parking situation is informal, but the wave is worth the effort.

You'll need a scooter with good tires (the dirt road to the parking area can be rough in the wet season). The wave itself is a long, sweeping left that handles size well — it can hold overhead when other spots are closing out.

- Skill: Intermediate to Advanced

  • Best tide: Mid to high
  • Best swell: S-SW, 4-10 feet
  • Bottom: Sand and reef
  • Best season: April to October

Practical Tips for Surfing Uluwatu

- Best season is April to October (dry season, offshore winds)

  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen — the locals will appreciate it
  • Hire a scooter for flexibility between spots (daily or weekly rates)
  • Always check the tides — most reefs only work at mid or high
  • Respect the locals — give way in the lineup, especially at Uluwatu proper
  • Wear booties at reef breaks — limestone is sharp and can cut your feet badly
