When to Surf in Bali: A Month-by-Month Guide

·7 min read

Dry season glassy, wet season mellow — here is how to plan your Bali surf trip around the swells, winds, and tides.

There's a reason Bali has been a surf destination for over 80 years. The island catches swell from two oceans, the water is warm year-round, and there's a break for every level. But timing your trip right can make the difference between glassy perfection and frustrating mush.

After years of chasing swells around the island, here's my honest month-by-month breakdown for when to come.

The Short Version

- Dry season (April – October): Best waves, offshore winds, bigger swells

  • Wet season (November – March): Smaller, softer waves, fewer crowds, occasional rain
  • Peak surf season: June – September (consistent groundswells, light winds)

Our Canggu Surf Paradise is the perfect base year-round — but if you want the best conditions, target June through September.

January – March (Wet Season)

Light to medium swells. Mornings are usually glassy before the afternoon onshores kick in. Water is warm (28-29°C). Crowds are minimal — perfect for longboarders and beginners.

Rain typically falls in short, intense bursts, mostly in the late afternoon. The lush green rice paddies around Canggu make this a beautiful time to visit, and the surf is consistently fun (if smaller).

- Wave size: 2-5 feet

  • Water temp: 28-29°C
  • Wind: Variable (usually light mornings, onshores by afternoon)
  • Crowds: Low to moderate
  • Vibe: Relaxed, lush, quieter

April (Transition)

Swell picks up as the Southern Ocean winter storms start firing. Water still warm (28°C). Crowds start returning. April is a sweet spot — good waves, not yet peak season crowds.

Many surf photographers consider April the most photogenic month — the light is golden, the surf is consistent, and the water is still warm without a springsuit.

- Wave size: 3-8 feet

  • Water temp: 28°C
  • Wind: Mostly light offshore mornings
  • Crowds: Moderate, increasing
  • Vibe: Sweet spot, rising action

May

Often the best month for advanced surfers. Consistent groundswells, light winds, uncrowded lineups at the more exposed reefs. The Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu, Padang Padang) starts working consistently.

May is also one of the cheapest months to visit — accommodation rates drop in early May before the peak season rush. If you're flexible, this is a hidden sweet spot.

- Wave size: 4-10 feet

  • Water temp: 27-28°C
  • Wind: Light offshore most days
  • Crowds: Low to moderate
  • Vibe: Advanced favorite, quiet

June – September (Peak Season)

The holy months for Bali surfing. Long-period groundswells from Antarctic storms, reliable offshore winds, and water still warm enough (26-27°C). Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, and Impossibles are at their best.

Crowds peak in July and August — book accommodation early. Expect heavy traffic at Uluwatu, especially mid-morning when the wind glasses off.

- Wave size: 4-12 feet (bigger swells July-August)

  • Water temp: 26-27°C
  • Wind: Reliable offshore
  • Crowds: High to very high
  • Vibe: Peak performance, vibrant

October (Transition)

Tail end of the dry season. Swell is still consistent but winds can be tricky early in the month. By late October, the wet season starts returning. Often less crowded than peak season with still-solid waves.

October is the secret season for surf photographers — the light gets softer, the crowds thin out, and the waves are still pumping from the last gasp of southern hemisphere winter storms.

- Wave size: 3-8 feet

  • Water temp: 27-28°C
  • Wind: Variable
  • Crowds: Moderate, declining
  • Vibe: Local favorite

November – December

Smaller swells, but the rainy season brings occasional good windows between weather systems. Mornings can be glassy. Water is warmest of the year (29°C). Best for beginners, longboarders, and people who prefer uncrowded lineups.

The trade-off is rain — it can pour for an hour in the late afternoon, then clear up for sunset. Most days are still sunny, just expect the occasional tropical downpour.

- Wave size: 2-5 feet

  • Water temp: 29°C
  • Wind: Variable (mostly light mornings)
  • Crowds: Low
  • Vibe: Relaxed, warm, uncrowded

Practical Tips

- Check Magicseaweed or Windy for swell forecasts before booking

  • For Uluwatu proper, aim for mid to high tide with offshore winds
  • For Canggu (Batu Bolong, Echo), low to mid tide works better
  • Always carry reef-safe sunscreen — the locals will love you for it
  • The water stays warm year-round (26-29°C), so a 2mm springsuit is usually enough

Both Uluwatu Surf Paradise and Canggu Surf Paradise are great bases for year-round surfing. We're close to the best breaks, have gear storage, and can connect you with local guides if you want surf lessons.
