A long white-sand beach tucked below dramatic limestone cliffs on the Bukit Peninsula. Less crowded than Uluwatu proper, with one of the longest left-hand reef breaks in Bali.
Balangan Beach sits in Ungasan, on the western flank of the Bukit Peninsula — about 20 minutes' scooter ride south of our Uluwatu Surf Paradise. It is the kind of place that rewards both the traveler who wants to sit and stare, and the surfer who wants a long, peeling left.
Two Ways to Take It In
What makes Balangan interesting is that you can experience it from two very different vantage points without much effort.
From the cliff tops (the pre-wedding favorite). The limestone cliffs on the right side of the bay frame a wide view of the Indian Ocean. It is one of the more photographed sunset points on the Bukit and a popular pre-wedding location — you'll often see a small photo crew setting up as the light softens.
Down on the sand. A stairway cuts down the cliff to a clean strip of white-gold sand lined with coconut palms and a handful of small warungs serving fresh coconuts. It is more low-key than the main Uluwatu beaches and rarely gets packed.
What to Do
- Surf the long left. Balangan is a long left-hand reef break, fairly forgiving on smaller days, lined up and powerful when a south swell fills in. Best for intermediate and advanced surfers.
- Walk the reef at low tide. In the late afternoon the tide pulls back and exposes shallow coral pools along the cliff base — green moss, sharp edges, and good photos if you watch your step.
- Bring a book and a coconut. For the less active crowd, the warungs near the cliff base are the simplest place in the Bukit to actually do nothing.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
- Not for casual swimming. The swell and rip current along this stretch are real. There is no lifeguard tower like at Kuta or Pandawa. Stay near the shoreline, and don't go out if you are not a strong swimmer.
- Best time of day. For quiet and a mostly empty beach, come between 7 and 9 AM. For sunset, arrive around 5 PM and stay through the light drop.
- Shoes. The path down is steep and the coral at low tide is sharp and slick. Wear sandals or reef shoes — barefoot is asking for trouble.
Pair It With
Balangan is one of the easier spots to build a half-day itinerary around. From Uluwatu Surf Paradise, a few natural pairings:
- Dreamland Beach. Next bay over, similar break but with more developed beach-club infrastructure. 5 minutes by scooter.
- Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park. About 15 minutes' drive. Easier to do this at midday when Balangan is at its hottest, then head to the cliffs for sunset.
- Uluwatu Temple and Kecak. If you take sunrise at Balangan, you have plenty of time to make the sunset Kecak at Pura Luhur Uluwatu the same day.
